It's no
secret that the lakes in the Northern MN Resorts Area are three
of Minnesota's best walleye and crappie fishing lakes. But
what may surprise you is that the fishing pressure on these
lakes is relatively small - so you have a much greater chance of
landing a trophy lunker walleye!
A
wide variety of Minnesota gamefish inhabit the area's lakes and
rivers. These include Walleye, Northern Pike, Yellow Perch,
Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Rock Bass, Black Crappie,
Bluegill, Sunfish, and Bullhead.
When you
come to the Northern MN Resort Area you'll find that most of our
resorts offer fishing boat and motor rental, with some offering
fish locator and trolling motor rental as well.
Most of the
resorts have live bait available on the premises. If you
are bringing your own boat, dockage is available with several
resorts offering the added safety of protective harbors.
Some of the resorts also have their own private launching
facilities.

Bowstring
Lake contains 9,220 acres of Minnesota's top fishing waters for
Walleye, Northern Pike, Crappie, Bass, Panfish and Jumbo Perch.
The Minnesota DNR lists Bowstring Lake as one of the state's top
walleye fishing lakes. According to data from the DNR's latest
lake survey, Bowstring is managed primarily for walleye and
secondarily for black crappie, northern pike and jumbo perch.
The most recent report notes that walleye were sampled in gill
nets at the highest rate on record and at a rate which exceeds
the expected range for this type of lake. Translation for all of
this? -- How quickly can you get to Bowstring Lake?

Jessie
Lake is a 1,750 acre lake that boasts an abundant supply of
walleye, northern, crappie, jumbo perch, and small and
largemouth bass. The Lake is approximately four miles long and
one mile wide, with a maximum depth of 40 feet and an average
depth of 22 feet. Jessie Lake is managed primarily as a
walleye lake. It is currently stocked with walleye fry every
three years. The Jessie Lake Watershed Association is a very
active group that is working with the DNR to restore walleye
spawning habitat and maintain or improve water quality. During
the 1999 assessment, the walleye gill net catch rate was at an
all time high (22.0/gill net) for Jessie Lake, far exceeding the
expected range for this type of lake.

Sand
Lake is a naturally fed 4,300 acre lake with a maximum depth of
70 feet. Anglers enjoy the tremendous multi-species
fishing available here. The lake boasts an abundant supply
of walleye, northern, bass, jumbo perch, crappie and panfish.
Sand Lake benefits from an aggressive DNR walleye stocking
program which stocked 1.9 million walleye fry and 2,513 walleye
fingerlings in 2003. The average walleye caught in Sand
Lake reaches a length of 16" by 5 years of age. The
lake is connected to several other area lakes via the Bowstring
River. From Sand Lake there is direct access to Little
Sand Lake, the Bowstring River, Rice Lake, Dora Lake and the
Bigfork River, Birds' Eye Lake, and Portage Lake.

Little
Sand Lake is a 361 acre lake making it a great lake to
fish on windy days when bigger water is too rough.
It is connected to Sand Lake to the south and to Rice Lake and
the Bowstring River to the north. Boaters can also reach Birds'
Eye Lake, Portage Lake, Dora Lake and the Bigfork River from its
waters. Little Sand has abundant aquatic vegetation and is
generally shallow with a maximum depth of 19 ft. Because
of its small size and shallow basin, Little Sand Lake would not
be expected to provide a walleye fishery. However, Little Sand
Lake has an excellent walleye population which likely results
from walleye movement throughout the Bowstring River
system. Anglers can expect great walleye fishing, northern
pike fishing, bluegill fishing, crappie fishing and perch
fishing.
